Having been in the Zebra printer repair business now for over 25 years servicing all thermal printers (including label printers, barcode printers and card printers) it is easy to reflect back and look at historical reports on various service issues.
One thing that stands out in our reports is how many service calls could have been prevented by users of Zebra printers if they had taken just a few minutes every few weeks and performed some very basic preventive measures. Companies could have save thousands of dollars on service calls.
When you think about placing a service call, most people look only at the bill they receive for the repair. However, this is only part of the story.
Here are some soft costs often ignored when you have a Zebra printer outage:
When a printer becomes defective, everything that is sent to that printer stops and the work flow process comes to a halt. Are people waiting around or at a full standstill for a number of minutes? That could add up to a major loss of productivity and cost.
If an IT person is called to see if they can “fix” the printer, there are costs associated with that person’s time. After all, they are on a salary with benefits.
How much time is taken for a person to search on-line or in the yellow pages for a certified Zebra repair specialist? There is a cost associated with that time and lost productivity as the person is not performing their normal job duties.
Does a manager have to be involved in this process? What is their cost?
How much down-time, not to mention the inconvenience of having a printer down for two or three days, will there be if parts are not readily available?
How much paper work is involved? Sending the printer company’s invoice to accounts payable to be entered into a system, cutting a check, postage, etc., and administrative time should be taken as a cost factor that flows negatively to the bottom line.
